A Letter from Chancellor Banks
Dear Colleagues,
On March 2, when I outlined my vision for transforming and building trust in New York City public schools, I spoke about a new set of commitments to students and families that will strengthen and unify our school communities. A crucial component in fulfilling this responsibility was the unprecedented inclusion of parents and community members in the superintendent hiring process to identify the best individuals to lead and support our schools and school leaders.
After an intensive search, which included a rigorous interview process, community town halls, and Chancellor’s Regulation C-37 consultations, we are pleased to announce today the superintendents who will work in service of our schools, students, teachers, families, and communities. I want to thank everyone who participated in the superintendent hiring process as well as all the parent leaders and union representatives who thoroughly and responsibly contributed to this important effort.
These 45 individuals, listed below, representing a diverse cross-section of experience in public schools, were selected based on the indispensable feedback we received throughout the process and for their commitment and ability to reimagine the student experience, support school leaders to accelerate learning in every school, and build partnerships with families and communities. These exceptional leaders will report directly to the Deputy Chancellor of School Leadership Desmond Blackburn starting July 1.
As we phase out our Borough and Citywide Offices as well as Executive Superintendent positions, these superintendents will have an elevated role in our system giving them greater levels of autonomy to streamline decision-making and greater capacity to respond to the needs, values, and diversity of our communities. With these leaders in place, we will build stronger and more inclusive learning environments for our students and more robust opportunities for partnership with our families. Superintendents will act as the primary point of contact for school leaders, parents, community members, and elected officials in finding solutions to issues in our public schools.
As we move into the summer, thank you for your leadership and dedication throughout this school year! I have full confidence that as we start to ramp up for school year 2022-23, these superintendents will build on the work of this year and will demonstrate an unwavering dedication and commitment to the academic and long-term economic success of our students and the long-term health and safety of our schools.
Join me at 2:30 pm on this live stream to introduce your superintendents: https://www1.nyc.gov/.
Soaring high,
David C. Banks

- Citywide Council on English Language Learners (CCELL)
- Citywide Council for D75 (CCD75).
